Integrating one Microsoft Dynamics NAV system to other NAV installations or other business management software, even from the Dynamics stack, was next to impossible in previous versions. The only concept that was working - barely - was Intercompany Postings, which was far from automated, difficult to properly set-up, and wasn't usable in any mission critical or real-time scenarios.
First with opening up through Web services, then through reaching out through .Net Interop, Dynamics NAV 2009 is now able to talk to just about anything out there - efficiently, in real-time, and fully automated. These capabilities open the doors wide for many B2B (busines-to-business) integration scenarios where ERP processes can be integrated on a level beyond many people's imaginations: multi-business supply-chain planning, real-time intercompany order and payment processing, up-stream integration of order promissing scenarios, etc.
